Botox® Trivia
There were 3.2 million Botox Cosmetic procedures performed in the United States last year.
Botulinum toxins were first researched in the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. Botox was first approved by the FDA in 1989 to treat eye muscle disorders (blepharospasm, uncontrollable blinking, and strabismus, crossed eyes). In 2000, Botox was approved to treat cervical dystonia (a disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder contractions). As an unusual side effect of the eye disorder treatment, doctors observed that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows.
In 1994 it was discovered that Botox can be used to significantly reduce excessive sweating. Today, injections of Botox are given to decrease sweating on the palms, underarms, soles of the feet, and forehead, although the first two areas mentioned are the most common ones treated. The toxin blocks the release of acetycholine, the chemical responsible for stimulating the sweat glands. So, if you or someone you know suffers from hyperhidrosis Botox could be a solution to the embarrassment and discomfort it may cause.
